Youth Voices: On Growing
Youth Voices features voices and stories from youth across North Texas.
Along my journey of life, I experienced highs and lows, a roller coaster of events that humbled me to be the person I am today. As I continued to seek out people and things in life, coming from a different starting point than others was difficult. I was coming from a broken place, trying to make it another day not thinking about my future. Focused on the wrong things and wrong people. I started to ask myself, “What do I want to experience? Do I want to be happy? Do I want to be fulfilled in life?” As I asked myself these questions, I started to rethink my life. I heard this quote that said,
“If a flower doesn’t bloom do you blame the flower or the environment? Are you going to check the soil? The light? The air around it?”
We as humans are that plant. In our own lives what are we looking at? Who are we hanging around? What places are we surrounding ourselves with? For so much of my life, I had begun poisoning myself with the wrong people and things, and I started to slowly let the world get to me. If you wanted to visualize it, think of a plant – I was dying while there were weeds destroying my roots. Fast forward to the present, I created a new life for me that I love. Created a new atmosphere, and friendships around me that water me and allow me to grow and watch me grow. John Lennon said, “We’ve got this gift of love, but love is like a precious plant. You can’t just accept it and leave it in the cupboard or just think it’s going to get on by itself. You’ve got to keep watering it. You’ve got to really look after it and nurture it.”
